Singapore Stories 2022

“Fashion United”

For 2022, we invited designers to create a 6-look capsule collection, themed ‘Fashion United’. The theme aims to position Singapore as an innovative and multi-cultural fashion hub for South East Asia and to celebrate the unity of diverse, culturally rich and immersive Asian fashion, promoting cross-cultural artistry. Contestants are also encouraged to leverage innovation to drive sustainability and to foster a circular design thinking approach to their designs.

In line with one of SFC’s strategic pillars - Technology and Innovation, we encouraged contestants to leverage innovation to drive sustainability and to foster a circular design thinking approach to their designs.

The winner of the competition was awarded the Singapore Fashion Award and will have the opportunity to display their winning looks in the contemporary gallery at Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) alongside renowned designers in #SGFashionNow.

The winner also walked away with a $5,000 cash prize, and retail opportunities on SFC’s online and offline retail showcases, Design Orchard and OneOrchard.Store.

For 2022, the five Finalists got to showcase their final collections on a highly publicized runway presentation at ACM, to a crowd of decorated and celebrated fashion insiders, media professionals, fashion influencers and ambassadors.

On 28 October 2022, we announced the winner of Singapore Stories 2022, Kavita Thulasidas, with her collection, Heritage Reinterpreted and Beyond.

Winner: Kavita Thulasidas

Having been brought up under the canopies of a family in the fashion industry, marrying various fabrics with creative weaves and embroidery came naturally to Kavita. She started her fashion career by taking over her family’s garment business in 1999 with the vision of inspiring appreciation for our heritage through fashion. Through her creative direction and eye for weaving together Singapore’s diverse cultures, the business soon became lauded as a uniquely Singaporean brand.

Since then, Kavita has won numerous awards, the most recent being the Women Entrepreneur Awards 2017. Recognising that high-profile powerful Singaporean women like to dress in modern style with an ethnic twist that reflect their cultural background, Kavita launched her own fashion label, Asian Woman, in 2004. Through its success, Kavita was a finalist of a national start-up competition that was featured on Chanel 5. She has also been featured on several other TV channels and print media, such as Chanel News Asia and The Straits Times, as one of Singapore’s most successful designers. She has dressed high-profile clientele such as ministers for state events and even foreign royalty. With the vision of bringing Singaporean culture and fashion to the rest of the world, she created her own line and launched her first independent store at the One Galle Face mall in Colombo.
