Singapore Stories 2021

“Fashion and Technology: A New Era”

2021’s theme highlights Singapore’s as a country that embraces technology and innovation and celebrates its accomplishment as a smart nation.

In line with one of TaFF’s core pillar - Technology and Innovation, we encouraged contestants to leverage innovation to drive sustainability and to foster a circular design thinking approach to their designs.

The winner will have the opportunity to display their winning looks in the contemporary gallery at Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) alongside renowned designers in #SGFashionNow but also a retail collaboration with SocietyA as part of their Designer Spotlight.

They will also be nominated as Singapore's representative for FD Paris fashion show during Paris Fashion Week 2021 where they will earn a spotlight in fashion global scene.

In July, we shortlisted 5 promising designers to continue onto the finals where their capsule collection will be showcased in October for all to see. These contestants have not only experience the vigor of being in a 8 month fashion journey but also endured the challenges of competing in a pandemic where all their businesses were affected and their daily lives greatly impacted.

On October 29, 2021 at 8:00PM SGT we announced the winner of Singapore Stories 2021, Jon Max Goh, and he took home the prestigious Singapore Fashion Awards title and all the prizes with it.

Winner: Jon Max Goh

Formally trained in womenswear, Jon Max Goh graduated from the prestigious Parsons The New School for Design, New York, as Menswear Designer of the Year (2015), where he earned his B.F.A. in Fashion Design.

His work revolves heavily around dissecting (his) culture and identity and enjoys exploring how these ideas take shape in the form of the wearable garment, always underpinned by a belief in the narratives of memory, makers and community.

He was a recipient of the CFDA Scholarship Award (2014), Hugo Boss Award (2015), and was one of i-D Magazine’s Top 10 Undergraduate Designers to watch. He has since been featured in STYLE.com (now VOGUE.com), Vogue Italia, Interview Mag, Buro 24/7 Singapore, Esquire Singapore and Harper’s Bazaar Singapore.

State of Becoming

“"The collection for me is a dream world: of what a non-eurocentric landscape might look like. My hope for this collection is for it to use fashion and garments to question these cultural narratives and memories, in order to celebrate our heritage."
